Best Credit Cards in India: How to Actually Choose One

Start With Your Spending, Not the Card
The "best" credit card is the one that rewards where you already spend the most โ fuel, groceries, dining, online shopping, or travel. A travel card with airport lounge access is wasted on someone who rarely flies; a cashback card with a low reward rate is wasted on someone with high monthly spending who could earn more with a premium card.
Card Types at a Glance
- Cashback cards โ simplest, straightforward % back on spends, no point-value math needed
- Reward point cards โ points redeemable for products/vouchers, value varies by redemption option
- Travel/miles cards โ best value if redeemed for flights/hotels, often has annual fee
- Fuel cards โ surcharge waiver + extra rewards specifically on fuel spends
Fees That Matter More Than the Reward Rate
A high reward rate is meaningless if the annual fee eats it up. Compare: joining fee, annual/renewal fee (and whether it's waived on a spend threshold), foreign transaction markup (matters a lot for international spends/subscriptions), and interest rate on revolving balances.
Before You Apply
- Check your credit score โ most premium cards need 750+
- Compare at least 3 cards on the same spending category
- Read the reward redemption terms โ some points expire or devalue
- Avoid applying for multiple cards in a short window; it temporarily dents your credit score
